The Lipstick lesbian flag is associated with the most feminine lesbians. Traditionally their colours and lip markings represent femininity. There is another version of the lesbian flag known as labrys made up of various symbols of the lesbian community over many centuries. The violet background colour is due to the fact that during the 20th century, Sapphic women used violets as an identifying symbol. The black triangle is derived from the triangle used during the Nazi holocaust to identify lesbians, transgender women and any other women pigeonholed into an “asocial” spectrum.
